Feature Cars: Yellow Fever
- Jun 08, 2010
This striking 2007 Lancer is the pride and joy of Queenslander Reece Boyd.
Reece is one of Australia's many avid car enthusiasts and has focussed on enhancing his Lancer's lines by bulking it up with Accolade front and rear bumpers and ground hugging side-skirts. The tough Evo8 rear-wing finishes the lines off very nicely. To ensure the body kit doesn't scrape on the roads, a tasteful set of BSA 18" chrome wheels have been fitted.
Brad Taylor from CarTunez is certainly no stranger to car audio, having created some automotive A/V masterpieces over the years. Waving his magic install wand over this Lancer, it's hard to believe that this wonderful example of his work was created in just over 7 days.
With the open boot on display, your eyes are immediately drawn to the two Alpine Type-R 12" (SWR-1222D) subwoofers that are mounted in the floor of the boot. Brad painstakingly formed a perfect mould of the sphere wheel area from fiberglass, which then formed the enclosure for the subs. Ensuring that the theme of the car flowed throughout, the top baffle was finished in yellow to further tie into the car's exterior.
Also taking up residence in the boot are the Alpine V-Power series amplifiers, all three of them. For the previously mentioned Type-R subwoofers, there are two of the Alpine monoblock amplifiers to ensure it's bass-o-plenty, right up to ear-bleeding levels.
With all that audio, balancing out the visual side of things is a giant 15" LCD monitor with another set of Alpine speakers flanking it on each side. The panel features even more yellow detailing with black trim to integrate with the boot aesthetics.
Often in car audio and the pursuit of perfection, the spare wheel is sacrificed. However, since this Lancer is Reece's daily driver, this wasn't a sacrifice he was willing to make. Through carely planning and skillful installation, Brad was able to relocate the spare wheel to fit in behind the rear seat.
Closing the boot, we move into the cabin where an Alpine IVA-D106EV resides, allowing easy control over the whole set-up through it's stunning fold-out touchscreen. With the addition of an iPod interface kit, Reece can now also plug in his 160GB Apple iPod Classic for endless hours of tunes. To ensure a beautifully smooth sound, Reece opted to add the famous Alpine PXA-H700 sound processor adding user control over all manner of tuning features.
A set of 6.5" Alpine Type-R (SPR-17S) component speakers brings the front stage to life, powered by an Alpine MRP-F600 amplifier. Ensuring the maximum potential is extracted from this system, Dynamat sound deadening was used throughout the cabin and boot to help eliminate rattles and vibrations, as well as being used to seal up the doors for great midbass performance from the component speakers. The midwoofer drivers from these front speakers were mounted in the factory location (with some minor modifications) and the accompanying tweeters flush mounted into the door panels.
We all know that when you go to a concert that the stage is out in front of you, but accomodating his rear passengers, Reece has had two sets of Alpine Type-R coaxial speakers fitted so they too can enjoy crystal clear, loud music.
To keep the system running at it's best, two batteries are being used; a Soundstream 700CCA and the very desirable Pulse PHB900. 1/0AWG cabling is used to channel all this power to the boot for the Alpine amps.
To highlight the car and install to it's finest, LED lighting has been used. Multi-colour tubes were mounted above the four foot-wells, with an additional four tubes used in the boot and two more in the boot lid. To give that ground-glowing effect, the underside of the Lancer was fitted with a multi-colour LED underbody kit. All this lighting is controlled by an uber-cool wireless controller. Rounding out the lighting are strobe head- and tail-lights.
So after just over seven days in the install bay and a hit to Reece's wallet to the modest tune of $15,000 (including installation), Reece has a remarkable sounding and very eye-catching Lancer. Testament to both Reece and Brad are some of the awards already claimed by this amazing vehicle; 3rd place in MEASQ's Queensland state series and other awards at various events for Best Body Kit, Best Illumination, Illumination Legend, Wicked Lighting, and Best Neons.
This case of Yellow Fever is contagious and if you're showing symptoms that could well be because Reece's Lancer is now for sale. You can contact Reece at rhi-see@hotmail.com if you would like more information.
