Digital Radio or 'DAB+' is now available across most of Australia. The marketplace now has access to many products to take advantage of this new technology in the home, but what are the options available to those of us who spend most of our radio listening time in the car?

Extract from the latest Digital Radio Industry Report (link above):
- Across 2009 in car listening represented 32% of all commercial radio listening - up from 26% in 2001 and up 3% from 2008. Currently in car listening to DAB+ radio is limited to one in-car adaptor or to a pocket DAB+ receiver in the car.
- Nielsen showed that in Survery 1, 2010 digital radio listening in cars represented 9% of all listening by place.
- A priority for the industry is to ensure there are further options available for DAB+ devices in cars.
- Major module suppliers have confirmed that they will be supplying DAB+ tuners for some leading automotive models by 2011.
- Frontier Silicon has developed the multi-standard automotive chip (DAB, DAB+ and DMB) to enable European brands to meet the 2013 mandate that all cars imported into France should have a digital radio. The DAB+ function will work for those cars imported into Australia.
- There are a number of aftermarket DAB+ devices in development that could be installed into new cars and to cars already in the market place.
- Talks continue with the automotive industry both in Australia and overseas to have DAB+ radios factory fitted into cars.
- CRA (Commercial Radio Australia) is planning an Automotive Industry Workshop for May 2010 with leading car manufacturers to provide updates on DAB+ in car development internationally and illustrate firsthand the benefits of digital radio.
